Overview
The Narvar Returns & Exchanges app simplifies the exchange process by providing specific tools for tagging, managing, and automating customer exchanges. If enabled, the Exchanges feature will automatically tag any exchange orders with a specific "narvar_exchange_order” tag. These tags make it possible to create unique rules for managing items that have previously been initiated as an exchange.
There are two main components to the Exchanges feature: Exchanges and Recommended Exchanges:
- Exchanges allow customers to exchange items for any variant (such as size) of the same product/SKU and price.
Note: This is the default option that will be used when you enable Exchanges unless you configure group tags for Recommended Exchanges (more information below)
- Recommended Exchanges allow retailers to group similar products and provide recommended exchanges for products across different SKUs. This gives customers the option to exchange unwanted items for similar items of the same or different price as the item they originally purchased.
Note: Recommended Exchanges is an optional feature within the overall Exchanges function (i.e you can’t use Recommended Exchanges without first enabling exchanges). By default, this Recommended Exchanges does not appear in the Exchanges settings. Please reach out to Narvar Support to have this feature enabled.
See how Recommended Exchanges works for more specific information and setup details.
Enable Exchanges
Navigate to the Narvar Returns & Exchanges app and click Settings. Select the Return Policy tile, then click Eligibility Rules. On the Eligibility Rules page, click the toggle switch to the right of Exchanges.
You can also edit the Default Exchange Window at this time.
Important: If you charge any shipping, handling, or restocking fees on your exchanges make sure to mark "Yes" to that question in the Exchange Details section below the Default Exchange Window so that your customers can pay for any charges they owe.
Exchange Tags
At the core of exchanges are Narvar exchange tags. As mentioned in the overview, if Narvar exchanges are enabled, exchange orders that are processed through Narvar will be automatically tagged with a “narvar_exchange_order” tag. These tags make it possible to create unique rules to manage items that have previously been initiated as an exchange.
In addition to the narvar_exchange_order tag, there are two additional (optional) tags that apply specifically to Recommended Exchanges. Unlike the system “narvar_exchange_order” tag, these tags must be manually added to your products in Shopify if you decide to use them and can be configured in the Recommended Exchanges section of your Exchanges settings.
-
Exchange Group Tag Prefix ("nvgroup_") is used to group similar products for recommended exchanges.
-
For example, if your store carries multiple backpack brands, you can create a group tag for “nvgroup_backpack”. Any products that have been tagged with the specific group tag will be eligible for exchange as long as the products have the same price and variant options such as size or color.

-
Exclusion Tags are used to exclude certain products from recommended exchange groups.
- The Exclusion Tags are set to “exclude_narvar_exchange” and “exclude_narvar_exchanges” by default. You can add these default tags to items you would like to exclude from your exchange groups, or create your own. You can have as many exclusion tags as you would like.
Note: The information and examples above are intended to provide a quick overview of how tags are used to enable Recommended Exchanges. See how Recommended Exchanges works for more specific information and setup details.
